Fishbowl

Taking turns speaking and listening in an orderly manner

Groups of 6 to 8 people achieve the best discussion outcomes. With 10 or more people, structure and focus are often lost. How, then, can all participants in large groups be included, appreciated, and heard?

The “Fishbowl” format solves this dilemma for 20 to around 150 people. The name refers to a goldfish bowl and describes the room setup: one or more large circles of chairs arranged around a central discussion circle.

The golden rule is that only the 6 to 8 people in the inner circle speak, while participants in the surrounding circles of chairs initially follow the discussion attentively. However, passive participants can join the discussion at any time by claiming a chair in the inner circle, following the rules defined in advance.

Ideally, both the discussion and the participant changes are guided by professional facilitation to ensure an orderly process.
