Werdringen Moated Castle
Werdringen Moated Castle is located in the Ruhr Valley, in a landscape shaped by history at the foot of the Kaisberg, steeped in legends and myths. The romantically situated castle complex is surrounded by a unique nature reserve that stretches along the chain of lakes in the north of Hagen.
After a varied history, the complex came into the ownership of the City of Hagen in 1977. Since 2004, Werdringen has been home to the Museum of Prehistory and Early History. It presents not only the remains of the “oldest Westphalians”, but also relics from 450 million years of the history of southern Westphalia.

Osthaus Museum Hagen
Following the reopening of the renovated and expanded building, the Osthaus Museum Hagen presents its significant collection in a new way. The focus is on works of early classical modernism and expressionism through to New Objectivity. Complementary special exhibitions offer a concentrated view of artists of classical modernism, juxtapose them with contemporary art production, and invite young artists to dialogue.
The rooms of the original Folkwang Museum retain a special splendor to this day thanks to the faithfully reconstructed interior design by Art Nouveau artist Henry van de Velde.

Hohenhof
The “Museum of the Hagen Impulse” in the Hohenhof provides an overview of the history of Folkwang Museum founder Karl Ernst Osthaus. The former residence of Karl Ernst Osthaus and his family serves as a branch of the Osthaus Museum Hagen in Hagen-Emst and is an anchor point of the “Industrial Heritage Trail.”

Hohenlimburg Castle
Hohenlimburg Castle is actually a Westphalian hilltop fortress surrounded by many legends. Whether it is the bloody founding story or the eerie “Black Hand”—even today, the castle complex fascinates countless visitors.
Anyone wishing to visit Hohenlimburg Castle in Hagen must first make their way up the hill—on foot or by car. And then they are in for a surprise. In fact, several surprises, to be precise: cannon barrels—witnesses to an eventful and not always peaceful past. After admiring the old cannons, you can visit the former service buildings in the lower castle, and in the upper castle the keep and the castle itself with its originally furnished rooms. The “Black Hand” is particularly popular. In addition, the German Cold Rolling Museum is located in the upper castle.

Westphalian Open-Air Museum
The LWL Open-Air Museum Hagen brings a piece of craft history into the present—hands-on! On the approximately 42-hectare site, the workshops and tools of urban and rural crafts are not simply displayed; production takes place in more than twenty of the nearly sixty reconstructed workshops. Interested visitors can observe the manufacturing process, question the museum demonstrators, and in some cases even participate in production themselves.
The Hagen Open-Air Museum, founded in 1960, opened its doors to the public in 1973. Unlike many other open-air museums that depict rural agricultural life of the past, the founding of the Hagen Open-Air Museum was based on the idea of highlighting the history of crafts and technology in Westphalia. The Mäckinger Valley provided the perfect conditions: wind, water, and forest were the three most important natural location factors.

A New Art Quarter for Hagen
Since August 28, 2009, the Hagen Art Quarter has enriched the cultural landscape of the Ruhr Metropolis and North Rhine-Westphalia as a new exhibition and event venue. Here, visitors can experience a broad panorama of artworks, ranging from representational to abstract, across two distinct museums.
Emil Schumacher Museum
The newly built Emil Schumacher Museum showcases one of the most internationally significant representatives of expressive painting across 1,200 square meters. It draws from a collection of over 500 originals from all creative periods of Emil Schumacher, provided by the Schumacher Foundation and the City of Hagen. The program is complemented by presentations of expressive painting from 1945 to the present day.
