In Black Rock Desert, a desert in the US state of Nevada, a complete city emerges from nothing within a few days each year, complete with hospital and airport, centered around the “Burning Man” festival. Symbolic of this organizational masterpiece is a larger-than-life wooden installation of a man that is burned in spectacular fashion.
The structures that emerge during a conference, the strategies that have been agreed upon, are not as easily observed as a city that suddenly manifests itself. All the more reason for symbols like the burning wooden figure to make visible what has emerged or – and this lies entirely in the hands of the person telling the story – to burn what should no longer be.
