Moated castle WerdringenThe moated castle Werdringen lies in the Ruhr valley, a historical landscape at the foot of the Kaiserberg, steeped in legends and myths. The romantically situated castle grounds are surrounded by a unique nature reserve which stretches along the lowland plain of lakes in the north of Hagen. The peerage of Werdringen was mentioned as early as the 13-th century. At this time the moated castle was a stronghold. During that time Werdringen belonged to the feudal lord "von Volmestein". In the course of the 15-th century the building was rebuilt and became a moated castle, in the middle of the 19-th century other parts of the building were added in neo-gothic style. After an interesting and varied history the grounds changed possession in 1977 and now belong to the city of Hagen. Since 2004 Werdringen has been the home of the Museum of Palaeontology and Archeaology. Here not only the remains of the " oldest Westphalians " are on display but also relics from 450 million years history of southern Westphalian.
