Osthaus museum Hagen
Since the 28th of August 2009 the newly renovated and extended Osthaus museum Hagen presents its impressive collection of international
modern and contemporary art in an exciting new way. It offers it's visitor an
intense encounter with artworks from the classic modern especially with major
works from German expressionism to the emotional, colourful works of the
renowned Hagen artist Emil Schumacher and his peers. Through to media art and
contemporary features.
The
Folkwang Museum founded in 1902 by Karl Ernst Osthaus will soon be famous
world-wide as being the first for contemporary and modern art. In the Art
Niveau style rooms designed by Henry van de Velde, the artworks from different
cultures and eras are displayed side by side. Not just this revolutionary
concept of exhibition but also his structural engagements in the city of Hagen,
Osthaus has pursued his aim to unite art with life. The
patron of art and culture put all his creative energy into renewing the structures
of society.
His
initiative between Art Niveau and building structure later brought together as
the "Hagener Impulse" can still be seen today. The city of Hagen offers its
visitors varied architecture from the Art Niveau era mixed with the early
modern. The aesthetic ideas founded in the museum have extended into and
influenced society itself. After the city of Essen which bought the Osthaus art
collection in 1922, Hagen is one of the most important art centres in the Ruhr
area.
